A Year Full of Failure

I have to say, I’ve never consistently failed so much in my life before. It was just like a constant chain of misery and rejection. Simply put, swing after swing and strike after strike.

The theory goes if you swing a lot, you eventually hit one out of the park. Well, I’ve done more swings than a devilishly handsome sailor in the 60’s, and I’ve only got a few fly balls.

It really sucks to work your ass off and dedicate yourself to something for two years straight and still suck at it. I guess that’s why it pays so much because not even the hardest sport takes this long for you to gain the ability to be good at it.

I just wonder if I’m in the right field. Shouldn’t I have made that home-run at least by now? I’m constantly tortured by classmates who rack up awards like nothing and walk around with big grins on their face with out a care in the world.

Don’t they have any problems? Am I the only one in this school who isn’t rich and whose parents aren’t paying my bills? Maybe that’s it. Maybe I’m too harsh on myself and need to assess my situation from a logical viewpoint.

If I didn’t have to work, and take care of the apartment I live in by myself, maybe I would have the same amount of time these rich students have to work on these campaigns. But when I do this, it seems like I’m making excuses for myself. So this can’t be right.

Everyone is dealt their own cards. Some, naturally, are just given better hands and better opportunities than others. But that doesn’t mean you should fold if others have a bigger advantage over you.

It’s just really hard to compete when the odds are stacked up against you like that. So what does one do?

Do you keep failing and keep investing boatloads of money and time of emotional torture into this far fetched idea that you will actually be able to compete with these people who have it so much better than you do?

I mean I’ve witnessed students who literally took me to their luxurious condos on the skyline waterfront of Manhattan. Meanwhile, I’m dodging crack heads and stick up kids just to make it to my roach-infested apartment in time to get a few hours of sleep before I have to get up and beat the morning rush for the long ass commute to school.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just bitching. Maybe I need to except things for what they are and do my best not end up in a place where I’ve been set up to be. Maybe I need to struggle as much as I can with little ass end of the stick I was given, to get where I want to be.

I know it can be done. This year, I was so inspired by the seniors work. Some of them I know personally, are smart as hell and very clever.

I learned a lot from them just by talking to them and seeing their work. One thing I picked up is that it’s very hard to make it in the ad bizz by yourself and that’s exactly my situation.

I just can’t seem to find a partner I can work with who is as dedicated to ads as I am and as loose and relax to brainstorming up some kick ass ideas. Well, that's enough writing for now, I guess I’ll save this topic for the next time I feel like writing.

Art Is Powerful

It's used everyday on the posters, magazines, and billboards we pass by to and from work and school on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we are constantly bombarded by garbage art direction and even worse, manipulative images by marketers who's sole purpose on this planet is to make people feel inadequate.

Their purpose, the marketers, is to get you to think that your not skinny enough or your boobs are too small, or that you have to have blond hair and coach bags to live a normal life.

It's the weapon of consumerism which is key to keeping a capitalistic government running and raking in the cash.

Lately, I have stumbled upon a different kind of art however. Maybe it could be called the opposite of advertising. Or you could call it the art for the people.

Art that empowers and brings hope to people is way more powerful than art that invokes self-doubt.

How to Work with People of Fragile Egos??

It's a very difficult thing to do. Well, for me it is. It's like constantly skating on thin ice. Make the wrong move and it breaks just like that and your left swimming in the freezing cold.

To be able to deal with a fragile ego you must first be able to understand it.
It's basically like a stomach with a bottomless pit. There is no end to it's hunger and the more you feed it the more hungrier it gets.

Basically, it's the constant need to feel like you are important. Especially around people. Egotists or egomaniacs, whatever you call them, are known for sucking up the energy out of the room and leaving everybody dead tired while he goes on blabbing on about himself and his deepest thoughts no matter if your interested or not.

This egotists is not interested in anyone but himself and though he may claim to go to meeting or social events to mingle with others, what he's really doing is trying to prove to everybody how great and important he is.

However, more importantly, he's really trying to prove to himself that he is better than everyone he comes across.

For example, if he comes across one who does something better than him or has something he doesn't, his hungry ego will start to kick in and he will begin to feel less important. This is because he is in constant comparison of himself with others in one of his greatest fears is feeling inferior.

I find this to be a highly difficult situation and if anyone has any advice on dealing with these people it would be greatly appreciated if you left me some.

Have I finally found my purpose for being in this world? Or are we just put on this planet to mate and multiply like mindless bugs? Or even further, are we on this planet just to acquire needless materials to display the reflection of our social status?

Today, in class, I came to a realization. I was finally able to see myself be on this earth for a cause or rather an ideal. I’ve come to realize that I have something of a gift which in turn could be used for the greater cause of life.

I was enlightened to see way beyond a distance I’ve never fathomed. I hadn’t realized until now the importance of art and its political impression on politics, society, and religion. Liberation through out history was born through iconic symbolism and artistic visuals. Nations were either suppressed or they where liberated through the social communication of graphic design.

As an artist I have a genuine way to give back to this world without fulfilling any interest of what I will get in return. When it comes to being right, we, as artist even beat out the senior citizens who go to church every chance they get. That’s because artists make art because that’s what we love to do if the world benefits from it than, that’s even better. However, senior citizens go to church cause they know they’re going to die so to save their asses from going to hell they keep the pews rather full.

What purpose do you have in life? Has the idea even bounced around your head a little? Maybe it has and you don’t realize it. Maybe some people never think about why they are here. Maybe they just think about things they want to acquire in life. Maybe they don’t realize there is something better out there for us than the possession of items. Maybe some way or some how, we all have a gift that we are given and we are to use that very same gift to give back. Is this a small part of what some theories and religions call the balance?

Well I’m not religious. Nor am I a philosopher. However, knowing that there is something out there that I like to do and that this thing I like to do can actually help people, the environment, educate, and bring to the light what’s in the dark or hidden from sight of the masses, seems pretty damn good.

It almost seems to link up too good, if you know what I mean. Where the hell does that connection come from? I couldn’t have put that together by myself if my life depended on it.

On the other hand, no one has ever shown me this way of looking at life before. My parents never for a second brought this to my attention. Even to this day, they may still not even know of this way at looking at life.

Seriously, is your purpose in life to be a work drone for a paycheck every week? Is that what you want to spend your life doing. Do you want to go through the same boring routine everyday for the same check every week? Is that all they will be able to say about you in your obituary? “He or she lived a long life, had a steady job, made funny jokes and loved the Heineken and Red Skins games.” Does this obituary honestly sound like he or she made the most of his/her time on this planet?

Are we destined to live our lives like robots and keep following the same mindless routine to put money in our bosses pocket and take a little chunk off for ourselves? With all the amazing things within this world and all the serious problems that need something to be done about them, are we putting the time given to us to live on this planet to good use?

I have to say the 2009 ended in a way I totally did not expect. I just can’t believe I was inside of a small church when the clock struck 12. I could swear somewhere, like on a mutated farm in China, there was a pig born with wings because I am the last guy to be expected seen strolling through a church aisle but it happened.

However, being a student of copywriting I’d have to say that the advertising greats are right when it comes to finding inspiration because I found inspiration that night. The best creative directors say you can’t sit in an office to find inspiration. They say you have to go out and let it find you.

Well it just so happened that one of my cousins is getting locked up for quite a while (you know us Puerto Ricans are always up to something) and became this great religious suddenly. He requested that I be with him at the church that night so I got dragged down there for New Year’s Eve.
So I’m sitting there and feeling so out of place when I here the minister say this great line. Well he didn’t say it as great as a copywriter would but it was a damn good phrase. It went a little something like this.

“It’s not the number of years displayed on your lifespan that is important. What’s important is the dash in between.” So it’s not about how long you live your life, it’s what you do with the time given to you.

You can sit around waiting for better days or better moments in life or you can take action and make them happen. We have to live for the now.You could say I’ve found a little “Divine Inspiration” in the ways of “Carpe Diem”( Live for today because tomorrow is not promised)

Now I'm far from the typical New York materialist but when it comes to awesome footwear I just can't help it. I care about my feet man. So they have to be cool looking. I don't have to have designer brand clothes or expensive shoes. I just need clothes that express who I truly am. These Nike Air Yeezy's that where custom designed by the creative genius mind of Kanye West are a must have.

These shoes don't say I'm rich. They don't say I'm clean and fresh. They say that the generation of 80's baby is here and we are the hybrids of the future that will change the world and reinvent the way things get done.

This sneaker mad me adventure through out the whole city in search of it. It was my quest to posses this heavenly pair that wasn’t quite angels but could get me as high as two turtle doves.

It didn’t matter how badly the weather was. I jumped over puddles, dodged angry mobs and dashed through the rain to find it. I looked for clues of its location and pestered the busy people related to it’s presence to find it. I was determined to own these no matter what.

I went by shop from shop to find it. Traveled far and traveled wide. Searched for artifacts and still to no avail it avoided my powerful desire to own it.
I was Indiana Jones and this was my lost ark or rather my holy grail.
On this quest you meet people. Some that where there to help out and others where there to get the Sneakers before I did and have it for themselves. To some it was a legendary sneaker that could not be spoken of but only among the elite of collectors.
It was a treasure to find a quest to venture on. I would stop at nothing to have it; even if my life depended on it. Us, sneaker collectors, are just as good as those high class collectors of art. Sneakers though they may be shoes demand just as much respect.

Lives travel far and wide just to obtain them and the truest don’t get them for the value of money. They own them for the value of its creation and the inspiration through which it was born. Now I understand the addictive fanatics somewhat of the legendary sneaker collectors.
And there they where, sitting on an alter protruding out of the wall of sneakers with what seemed to be like a beam from heaven shining down on them. “Could this be it?” I said to my self. All along I’ve been going out of my way to visit the most acclaimed sneaker shops in the city and here they where in NJ sitting right under my nose.

I grasped them to see if they where real or if I was just hallucinating. They felt soft but firm and I felt an aura surround me as the sneaker sat in my hand.
I fit my foot in one as it accepted my size and did not reject me as its humble wearer.

The clerk saw the look on my face and with out words me and him new eye to eye that I had to have these.
When I wore them I felt my mojo come back dramatically. My life energy finally came back to me and I was out of my depressive slump. A breath of relief released from my lungs and I felt alive again.

As I stood in the train I could see people staring at my feet. I saw some even point at my shoes and stare envy because they didn’t have them. For like the whole trip ride this woman couldn’t but look in envy and wish they where on her feet.
I took them off gently and placed them in their protective case.
It felt so good to own a fresh new pair of art on your feet. The sleek and futuristic design expresses my generation; the hybrid generation.
It’s as if when your sneakers start leaning and your in a slump, you feel in a slump as well. However, my swagger is back daddy.

The Semester Ends

The life of me is drained and put into the half decent work I put out this year. All my projects were let downs and none of them came out the way I hoped for. I wanted them to be great. Instead they where mostly looked at like autistic children by the polite and engaging smile that’s always shown to hide their obscure confusion on just what the hell they where looking at.

It was a stressful semester. I worked with partners this year and it’s sad to say none of my partnerships went well. Just as my projects, they just couldn’t seem to work out no matter how hard I tried.
It’s frustrating when you work really hard at something and it just ends up sucking. You put so much work into these puzzles and hope that even a mere glimpse of your idea is effective and clear and what you get in return is rejection and a pitying laugh.

Is this what the business is about? Egotistic conflicts and hard work that you spend hours on for someone to walk out the room and not even look at it. Sometimes I run into ego problems either with my self or these proclaimed teachers who have been in the business so many years.

Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I expected too much out of them. Maybe I expected too much out of my partnerships and my work as well. Maybe this preconceived expectations I have over situations is what kills them.
James Victore, the well established “Bad Ass Designer” and proudly my teacher says, “Don’t meet your hero. You’ll be disappointed.” Well I guess he was right because he disappointed the shit out of me this semester. I thought I would have gotten more out of him but I have just learned that just like diamonds and gold, great information doesn’t sit there. You have to go digging and you got to get in that teachers face and get the answers you seek.

Furthermore, James said another great thing. “Graphic Design is boring.” And he’s right most of the shit out here is. The graphics and visual out here don’t move anybody. They aren’t interesting. They are just decorations with no true meaning behind them.

So, I guess I did learn hell of a lot from him. It’s just hard as hell to ask him questions for some reason. It’s hard to go digging for the answers with him. Now that I think about it, all my teachers are like that.
I can see that they are great artists but the problem there is they aren’t that great of teachers because they don’t openly throw the information at you. The student at SVA has to go digging for those great answers. Now that I look back, some of the best information given to me was when I went digging in those rare situations.
The conclusion of the semester brings me to the realization of faulty expectations and the responsibility that I had in these situations in which I did not fully take up. I wanted the answers but I didn’t realize that I had to make them point me in the right direction.

I wanted great partnerships but I didn’t realize how much factors go into play in these situations. These include culture, race, gender, and even subjects of study. However, seeing past the tremendous amount of disappointment, rejection, and failure I amassed, I still learned a ton of shit which opened my eyes to see a whole lot fucking more.

How many times must one fail to succeed. How can one do it all alone? How can one make it through struggle and adversity with no support. How does an orphan get through life? How many wrongs must come out before one wants to do right. How much pain does it take to finally get that good feeling?

How many bad attempts does it take before you reach a good one? How do you get up to stand on scared knees and twisted ankles after falling 10 times to give it a go one more time?

How do you become a winner? It seems to me that a winner is just an illusion because in actuality nobody really pays attention to how many losses it took for them to get to that winner status.

If as humans, we have to fail more than we win just to get a win, then how can we be winners? Is a winner just a fling of the moment or does it mean more than just being a winner. Maybe it takes more strength to admit that you are one who fails. However, one who is strong enough to admit this must be strong enough not to give up and push harder because there is nothing to be lost.

It is not to anticipate that 15 minutes of success but to take in that failure really deeply as a process of life and learning.

Summer Vacation is Almost Over

Not that it felt like a vacation to me. Mainly because I haven't taken a single day off to relax because of those god damned SVA teachers programed me to be a work-a-holic. Anyway, I think I may try to take off at least a day this last week of vacation to rest and watch movies and go places.

Most of my summer has been spent staring at macs listening to itunes on random while I gobble down the last sugar coated sour patch in the bag and eat all the sugar dust up to stay energized. The life of a designer I have come to find out, is full of last minute changes and little amounts of half-sleep naps whenever you can find the opportunity to actually lay your back down.

However, I wouldn't have it any other way because this is how they say, you start off in the field. Yet, the good moments no doubt out weight the bad by a long-shot. Especially, when you have friends around to help out on creative projects. Corny jokes, wierd music and the beauty of randomosity is good combination I have to say for a designer to make it through the pressing and stressing hours of graphic design.

That is, if you can both work on the same level. By level I mean same frame of thought. Today I saw a graphic design piece get worshiped like a Bishop out of the Vatican. Meanwhile, I'm in utter shock because I'm used to the SVA teachers ripping my works apart like savage hyenas.

Well anyway, I never saw a design piece cause so much commotion of energy and excitement in a downtown Manhattan office before. It felt so great to see people excited and exhilarated by an art creation on a piece of paper.

However, it felt even better to be able to share that energy with someone else who you created with. I truly believe teamwork is best in the creative process however, there must be no negative energy and you must bug out and have fun in order to transmit that energy through your work and into those who view the art.

From the very little I know, I can say one thing and that is, it should knock you on your ass. When you see it, the visual should shake you up a little and wake you up. Then after that, the message should be as clear as day and stick in your mind like a catchy song you can't get out of your head.

The question is. How the hell do you do that?

In terms of the dictionary, from what I read. Communication is the process of sending and recieving information from one point to another through the use of sound, symbols, and for the blind, the sense of touch.

Thus, to be an effective communicator, one must utilize as much of the senses possible to transmit a strong and lasting message.

Affection. Most people can't live without it. They wake up everyday to pass through the hours striving to recieve whether they realize it or not. What's one of the first things you do in the morning? I bet involves a mirror. That's because we want to look good and why do most people want to look good? Chances are is to be accepte by others and to gain admiration and affection.

What troubles me is I see friends who can't go on without it. They are miserable because they don't have a girlfriend or boyfriend and it effects everything they do. It's as if the most important thing for them is to be loved.

They want to have someone their for them to comfort them with not only hugs and kisses but for more importantly, emotional stability. Why is this?

Do we need someone to tell us that we are good? Why is this?

Why do we strive for others approval of ourselves instead of striving for our own approval of our selves?

Personal Expression

He told me, it's not just for...it goes for the life you live as well. He told me to get my thoughts out there no matter if it is safe or not. He told me to forget the public view and just get it out there for them to see.

However, it is so hard for me to express my thoughts and to tell people what I really am feeling inside because... I'm not sure if it's the right thing to say to them. What if I say something to them they won't like.

Communication has so many distractions and confusions. It is so hard to express sincerity for me, to the person I am talking to because i was raised up in this world so cold.

Thus, personal expression must be my field of study and the essence of life surpassing my self. The factor of comunication goes beyond one mere person. It is the after taste of a monumental revolution.

The world turns from dark to light as it must. Through these motions, some of the little lives that live on it; through day as it passes, go through experiences that only our planet can offer.

Thus, as a child of Earth, one can only grow and learn through experience. This involves not only the elements of the planet but also the dynamics of other people who suffice on this earth as well.

A child of this planet is essentially a traveler. Thus, a child of the earth must travel to understand the people that live on it and the planet that they live on.

Let this be clear. The most important asset of a human is the ability to understand. Thus, the key to life is to listen or to see where the occcurence is born.

I've seem to have found a friend amidst the troubled times I have been enduring throughout the heart of the us economy. Finally, I have found someone i=who is down to earth and can operate on a familiar level that I operate on as well.

Today, we worked on a joint venture for a client responsable for producing an alcoholic beverage new to the pop scene of the us.

He is very talented and shares the same passion if not more for the love of the art of creative content. We worked on a very imortant project today and I noticed both of us putting more than just work hours into the project. I noticed both of us put our heart and soul into it.

I believe that is what seperates an artist from the rest. They can apply emotional content into their work. Furthermore, an artist isn't limited to the field of art. No sir. Any creative can be considered an artist no matter what field they are in.

Thus, I will do my best to keep this friend that fate has dcided I encounter. We shall see what life has in store for me on this journey of finding what is waiting to be disovered among the infinite chances of life and also discovering my self as well.

What Goes In

When people see great things , it is common not to see what great efforts are put into to them. They don't see the countless hours and brain-racking that has been devoted.

Furthermore, what makes those accomplishments so great? Is it the fact that they are not common? I believe so. I believe those rare great accomplishment directly stem from that rare obsessive dedication that drives an individual to go above and beyond.

However, what pushes a person to go the distance? What would make you push your limits to achieve? According to Mark Ecko founder of Ecko clothing and Complex Magazine, it is not. Instead, Mark suggests it is when we are not in our comfort zone, that we can produce tremendous work. It is the feeling of not being satisfied and knowing that you can obtain more that drives an individual and it is also the love for that talent that makes it possibe to obtain.

I know the routine but I shall not follow. I have seen the lighted path and I will not be moved off of it no matter what kind of obstacles protrude my way. I will keep the passion of art that I had since I was a child and I will promote other artists passions as well. No matter what. I am a student and a follower of art. Art is truth and sometimes the truth hurts and more often than not it isn't easy. Yet in still, the path of enlightenment must be found and searched out through vigorous work and ambition, and most importantly love and interest.
